Sarah Palin Called Blasphemer by Fellow Christians For Equating Torture with Baptism

Sarah Palin sparked liberal ire this weekend when she made a comment claiming that if she were in charge, she would have no problem with torturing terrorists.

“They obviously have information on plots to carry out jihad,” Palin said of Muslim extremists she accused Obama of coddling at an NRA event. “Well, if I were in charge, they would know that waterboarding is how we baptize terrorists.”

Yet, the remarks also hit Christians -both liberal and conservative – the wrong way. After her comments were widely reported in the press, a group of concerned Christians launched a campaign to make it clear that Sarah Palin’s words do not represent them.

“For Christians, torture is not a joke or a political punchline, but a ghastly reminder of the suffering of Jesus upon the cross. By equating it with Holy Baptism — the act by which we are united with Christ in his death and resurrection — Sarah Palin is blasphemously twisting our faith into a weapon of hatred and violence,” a petition by Faith America read. “No media outlet should cover her remarks without reporting on how sincere Christians of all theological and political persuasions are appalled.”

So far, the petition has garnered over 15,000 signatures.

Joe Carter of the Gospel Coalition also objected to Palin’s rant, saying that she was not acting Christian at all, or even like a good conservative. “Gov. Palin was attempting to appeal to the basest political populism (nothing in her remarks could be construed as genuinely conservative) by claiming that current U.S. counter-terrorism policy is overly-tolerant and empathetic toward our enemies,” Joe Carter of The Gospel Coalition wrote.

He then suggested that her remarks were more pagan ethics and civil deistic religion that truly Christian.

For her part, Palin is standing by her claims, taking to Facebook to post a more than 300 word rambling rant to defend her position.

“Actions to stop terrorists who’d utterly annihilate America and delight in massacring our innocent children? Darn right I’d do whatever it takes to foil their murderous jihadist plots – including waterboarding,” she wrote on Monday, later concluding, “Good Lord, critics… buck up or stay in the truck. And if you love freedom, thank our troops! Thank our vets! And thank those who have the brains to support them and the guts to defend what they have earned!”
