Ted Cruz is Lying About Bill to Repeal the First Amendment and He Knows It
Texas Senator Ted Cruz should be “ashamed,” according to a University of California-Irvine law professor.
Erwin Chemerinsky has called the Tea Party favorite out in a The Hill op-ed published on July 3 for his disingenuous claims that the First Amendment is about to be repealed. The professor also said what makes matters worse in Cruz’s case is that the politician knows he is deceiving voters about the loss of their freedom of speech and just doesn’t care.
Recently, Cruz has been peddling his audacious claims about the First Amendment around conservative circles.
“When you think it can’t get any worse, it does,” Cruz preached to a roomful of pastors in May. “This year, I’m sorry to tell you, the United States Senate is going to be voting on a constitutional amendment to repeal the First Amendment.”
He also has linked the supposedly freedom-squashing constitutional amendment backed by Democrats to the denial of Christian’s religious liberties and endangered right to speak up against liberal policy-making.
“Sen. Chuck Schumer has announced the Senate Democrats are scheduling a vote on a constitutional amendment to give Congress the authority to regulate political speech, because elected officials have decided they don’t like it when the citizenry has the temerity to criticize what they’ve done,” Cruz further claimed.
Chemerinsky, though, insists that Cruz’s fear-mongering is simply a political show and that the Republican senator has knowingly “lied about what the amendment would do,” for political gain.
The proposed amendment “gives no authority to the government to ban or limit anyone’s speech,” Chemerinksy wrote, emphasizing that Cruz’s version does not come even close to the facts. “It does not change in any way the long-standing First Amendment principle that the government cannot restrict speech based on the content of the message or the views expressed. The amendment would do no more than allow the government to regulate spending in election campaigns.”
Chemerinsky also said that Cruz’s gross misrepresentation of the amendment bill leaves him only two choices – Cruz is either that dumb or that much of a liar.
Since he has seen Cruz in court and as a lawyer, Chemerinsky thinks it must be the latter.
“Ted Cruz is a lawyer who had a very distinguished career in government and private practice,” the law professor concluded. “I have debated him on several occasions and know that he is a person of great intelligence. He knows exactly what the proposed amendment would do and yet has chosen to vilify it by misrepresenting it.”
