Prosperity Scammer Pat Robertson Tells Elderly Couple to Keep Tithing Even if You’re Broke

For years, televangelist Pat Robertson has preached that tithing at least 10 percent is a path to financial prosperity and a debt-free life.

In fact, according to one of his teaching sheets, even those unable to pay their own bills should send in money so that they will be ‘blessed.’

“When a person begins to give to God’s work and to the poor and less fortunate, God begins to give back to him,” his ministry’s spiritual instructions on debt reads. “Regardless of the debt burden, a person should give a very minimum of 10 percent of his income to the Lord. Even if you are at a poverty-level income, you have something you can give to God.”

During today’s 700 Club, however, one of his faithful pointed out that even though she and her husband have been  tithing over their retirement income just as Robertson instructed,  they were not seeing the financial blessings fall out of the sky as the preacher promised.

In fact, they could no longer pay their own bills.

“My husband and I are in our 80s and have been tithing for many years. We both love the Lord and give willingly and our tithe is over 10 percent,” the woman wrote.

“Our old car just broke down and we had to borrow money to fix it,” she explained. “We both need dental work, but we can’t afford it. I constantly have to use our credit card to pay for medical needs… What could we be doing wrong?”

In response, the millionaire octogenarian told the couple that if they could not pay their bills and tithe, then maybe they needed to get a job to keep those tithes flowing.

“There are many ways of making money, even at 80 years old,” he counseled. “You know, you can get on the telephone, people are hiring. There are all kinds of things you can do. For example, you may have a bunch of junk lying around in your garage that you can sell on eBay, and get some money that way.”

Never once suggesting they may want to cut back on their tithing (even to 10 percent) to get their teeth fixed, he also advised them to appeal directly to God, telling the Creator that they have tithed all those years, so they want to be blessed.

“Just ask him,” he said, instructing them to pray, “Now, I claim my blessing, and I ask you to open the windows of heaven and pour me out a blessing. Show me what you’re going to do, show me how I can move into blessing.”
