Group Distributes ‘The Satanic Children’s Big Book of Activities’ to Counter Christian Groups Public School Bible Giveaway

Florida’s Orange County School Board ruled that Christian groups may distribute Bibles and other evangelical materials in their public schools.

In response, David Williamson and the Central Florida Free Thought Community decided to leave their own atheist flyers for the kids. The brochures, with titles like ‘Jesus is Dead’ and ‘Why I am Not a Muslim,’ were quickly disallowed.

After Williamson filed a lawsuit, the school board relented and said that it would allow materials from all groups, including atheists, at their high schools.

Now the Satanic Temple has decided to take the school board up on their offer and provide materials on Satanism as well.

The pamphlets, including one titled ‘The Satanic Children’s Big Book of Activities,’ is not actually aimed at recruiting kids to Satanism through the public school.

Like Williamson’s Free Thought Community, the Satanic group is making a statement that public schools should not be a forum for religious recruitment at all.

“We would never seek to establish a precedent of disseminating our religious materials in public schools because we believe our constitutional values are better served by respecting a strong separation of Church and State,” Lucian Greaves, the head of The Satanic Temple stressed.

He added that if the school is going to allow Bibles and Christian evangelism in the schools, though, “We think the responsible thing to do is to ensure that these students are given access to a variety of differing religious opinions, as opposed to standing idly by while one religious voice dominates the discourse and delivers propaganda to youth.”

The Satanist group has also worked to influence public school policy before. In April, the school launched a webpage to encourage kids to submit their names if they believed school spankings were wrong.

“If your deeply held beliefs oppose school faculty hitting you, physically restraining you or holding you against your will in an isolation room, please submit your name,” the website instructed, telling kids that the Satanic group would then contact the school telling them that spanking them was a violation of their rights.
